Ultralight Beam by Kanye West

The song Ultralight Beam is featured on Kanye West album The life of Pablo. I think this song is poetic because it uses a lot of smiles and metaphors and because the song has a deeper meaning. I think the song had very good metaphors and similes. In the song Kanye sings, "We on an ultralight beam/ We on an ultralight beam/ This is a God dream/ This is a God dream/ This is everything". Ultralight beam is a metaphor for the path to heaven. This adds meaning to the song because In Chance's verse he says "Treat the demons just like/ Pam/I mean I fuck with your friends, but damn, Gina". In this line Chance uses a simile to compare demons to Pam form the Martin show. In the show Martin, Martin and Gina were in a relationship and Gina's. In the show Gina's best friend Pam and Martin would mess with each other. This adds meaning to the song because Chance is comparing the demons to Pam and he show that he want to get away from them. Another Simile in Chance's verse is "Tryna snap photos of familia/My daughter look just like Sia, you can't see her." Sia is a singer who doesn't show her face in public, because she wants to maintain privacy. By protecting his family from the press he prevents them from seeing the trouble that comes when people become famous.

Though out the song they sing about a light. In Kelly Price's verse she sings, "Don't have much strength to fight/ So I look to the light/ (War) To make these wrongs turn right/ Head up high, I look to the light." and "Oh, no longer am afraid of the night/'Cause I, I look to the light". She uses the word light as a metaphor for god and by looking at the light she is looking at god for strength. She knows that God will make everything better and that he will take care of all his children. Another way the song uses the motif light is when Chance the Rapper sings, "This is my part, nobody else speak/This is my part, nobody else speak/This little light of mine/Glory be to God, yeah". The meaning of his light is talents god gave, the spotlight, and his dreams and wishes. He wants to make sure that everyone sees his talent and that they are paying attention, he doesn't want his moments to go notice.

Anaconda

Many of todays music video are quite the same, women dancing and showing off their figure in the videos. The music video “Anaconda” by Nicki Minaj came out in 2014. In this music video it shows many women in revealing clothing and shaking their hinds quarters. Matter of fact, the open scene of the video starts with two women shaking it. The music video uses the women to appeal to the man's eye in a sexual way, also known as these women are being shown as sex objects. The music video is half visual and half hearing which means that the lyrics of the song are also giving a message to the viewer that they have to be a certain way in order to fit in.

The music video is for everyone to see but everyone knows that the main target for the music video is for men. From the opening couple seconds of the song to the ending moments of the songs it's all directed to appeal to the man's eyes. The director made sure to get women with a pretty face but also good body parts. The women in the video are dressed very similar with their butts hanging out of their shorts and their breasts popping out. These women are all being viewed as sex objects. The women in this video are telling the girls that are watching this to dress and act like this in order to fill needs of a man. On top of that, the actual women in the video dress like so are also being used for men's sexual pleasure. The target audience is the men and the gaze that the men show to women. Everyone in the world can almost say that because of what the women are doing. This is showing that the only way to entertain a man to by having women dress up like that and dance like that. What type of message does this send to the younger girls watching this? This video can connect to the real world because often times in the media women are always being shown as sexy and slim but thick in the right places. This almost impossible figure to get is telling these ladies that to please a man you have to look like that and have that type of body and are willing to show it off.

The music video is half visual and half hearing. If you listen to the lyrics it sends a direct message to women. In the song it says, “ My anaconda don’t want none unless you got buns hun.” This is also sending a direct message straight to the women because its saying that without a body no man will want you. Women have to fill that position of having a nice body or else a man will not want them. Also in the song it reads that, ”F*** them skinny b*****s in the club I wanna see all the big fat a** b*****s in the motherf****** club F*** you if you skinny b*****s. What? Yeah. Ha-ha, ha..” This here is literally calling out skinny women in the world. It's literally saying that if you are skinny, that has to change because the only way you will be accepted is that if you have a thick body in the right places. This connects to today's situation because for so many years women have been trapped in this box where they have to fit this perfect image or they won't be accepted.

To conclude this music video portraits the women as sex objects to the men and the lyrics speak to women that you need to fit into this or you are out. This video is like a two in one effect for visual and hearing.

How Modern Music Brings Back The 1920's

The song “Be Together” by Major Lazer is old school. It expresses many different stereotypes, but there are a few prominent ones for men and women.  This work also expresses a few ideologies, one of those being “women in the roaring 20’s.” The gender stereotype expressed for men in the song are the gangster. For women the seductress / mistress stereotype is shown.

The group that made this song is called Major Lazer. They are a group of guys who use many different people to perform in their songs. They recently made album with many different singers, men and women. One of the songs in the album “Be Together” is performed by Natalie Bergman, and the song is from her point of view.

There are many examples of the “women in the roaring twenties” in this work. The first line of the song is a great example of the ideology of the twenties Natalie Bergman says: “Let me escape in your arms, baby I'm yours, baby I'm yours.” This supports the ideology of the twenties because in that decade women were expanding their ideas about how they were allowed to act and talk. They wanted it to be socially acceptable to be attracted to men. Women wanted to break the stereotype that they were supposed to be pure and chaste sexually. Another example of how this song expresses the ideologies of the 20’s is: “Maybe on the dark side we can be together, be together.” This expresses 20’s ideology because women in the 20’s wanted to show their, “dark side,” more. Women wanted to be more disobedient and more out of the home, and this line connects to the 20’s idea that women wanted to disobey their parents in order to be with men.

Beyond 20’s ideologies, “Be Together” expresses a lot of stereotypes of men and women. The first stereotype of women the song expresses is the seductress stereotype. A great example of this in the song is: “Maybe on the dark side we can be together, be together.” This quote shows that she is trying to seduce the man to the, “dark side”. This is part of the seductress stereotype. One of the stereotypes of men in the song is the gangster. This stereotype is expressed by this quote: “Tell me, is this freedom, baby? Chasing after danger, making my heart race.” This expresses the gangster stereotype because the guy is trying to impress the girl and win her over. This is also expressed by this quote because he is being a bad boy. Another quote that shows the same thing is this quote: “He was a dreamer at heart chasing the stars, chasing the stars wings spread to the sun I miss you so much, I miss you so much.”

The idea of women expressing themselves and still being accepted for it hasn’t been around for very long time. But popular culture and modern media are accepting it by leaps and bounds. This song isn’t the only piece of culture that expresses these ideologies and stereotypes.

Part Of Me

American culture is dominated by gender stereotypes and ‘ideal’ gender roles.  These gender roles, pressured onto Americans through the media prevent people from living their life they want to.  One of the most common and widespread gender stereotypes is that of the domesticity of women.  This gender role can be portrayed in many different ways, but the main idea is the same; Women are expected to be dependent on their boyfriend or husband. In the past few decades, women have been trying to disprove this ideology and show that women can be just as strong and independent as men.  In her song and music video “Part Of Me”, Katy Perry uses a female gaze and defies female stereotypes to show that women can be just as strong and independent as their male counterparts.

Katy Perry’s “Part Of Me” is all about becoming independent from a man.  In the chorus of “Part Of Me”, Katy sings “This is the part of me that you’re never gonna ever take away from me”.  This is in reference to her independence.  She is saying that no matter what her ex boyfriend does, he can’t take away her agency.  Agency is an important part of feminism because it allows women to be independent and to take control of their own lives.  The song lyrics and the music video project the same message.  In the music video for “Part Of Me” Katy joins the Marines after breaking up with her boyfriend.  This defies female gender roles because the military is a predominantly male thing.  The sticker she sees in the gas station reads “All women are created equal, then some join the Marines”.  Putting a female in a male dominated position is a bold way of promoting equality.  It shows that if a man can do it, than a woman can do it as well.  In the music video Katy also burns a letter that her ex boyfriend sent her, again promoting agency.

In conclusion, Katy Perry uses visual and auditory statements in “Part Of Me” to show agency and power on her own and away from her boyfriend.  This is just one of many modern day examples of female artists trying to break gender role stereotypes that have been deeply rooted in American culture.

The music video for "Part Of Me" is blocked on the OPRF servers and chromebooks, however the lyrics are posted below.

Katy Perry - Part Of Me

Days like this I want to drive away
Pack my bags and watch your shadow fade
[Standard version:] 'Cause you chewed me up and spit me out
["Complete Confection" version:] You chewed me up and spit me out
Like I was poison in your mouth
You took my light, you drained me down
But that was then and this is now
Now look at me

[Chorus:]
This is the part of me
That you’re never gonna ever take away from me, no
This is the part of me
That you’re never gonna ever take away from me, no
Throw your sticks and your stones,
Throw your bombs and your blows
But you’re not gonna break my soul
This is the part of me
That you’re never gonna ever take away from me, no

I just wanna throw my phone away
Find out who is really there for me
[Standard version:] 'Cause you ripped me off, your love was cheap
["Complete Confection" version:] You ripped me off, your love was cheap
Was always tearing at the seams
[Standard version:] I fell deep, and you let me down
["Complete Confection" version:] I fell deep, you let me down
But that was then and this is now
Now look at me

[Chorus]

Now look at me I’m sparkling
A firework, a dancing flame
You won't ever put me out again
I’m glowin’, oh, whoa
[Standard version:] You can keep the dog from me
["Complete Confection" version:] So you can keep the diamond ring
[Standard version:] I never liked it anyway
["Complete Confection" version:] It don't mean nothing anyway
In fact you can keep everything, yeah, yeah,
Except for me

[Chorus]

[Standard ending:]
This is the part of me
That you’re never gonna ever take away from me, no
This is the part of me
That you’re never gonna ever take away from me, no
Throw your sticks and your stones,
Throw your bombs and your blows
But you’re not gonna break my soul
This is the part of me
That you’re never gonna ever take away from me, no

["Complete Confection" ending:]
This is the part of me, no
Away from me, no
This is the part of me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me..., no
Throw your sticks and your stones,
Throw your bombs and your blows
But you’re not gonna break my soul
This is the part of me
That you’re never gonna ever take away from me, no

Is There Still Love in This World?

¨Where Is The Love¨ was a top hit song by the Black Eyed Peas released on June 16th, 2003. The song is a very inspiring song that features Justin Timberlake. There was a 2016 remix of the song that came out after the original was produced. In the lyrics the main idea of it is about we have major problems here in the United States, but we are overseas trying to help get rid of terrorists in a war that we really don´t why it is going on. In America we have the: CIA, KKK, Bloods, and Crips all described as terrorists groups and we aren´t fixing the problems here first. Children are dying and growing up without mothers and fathers, which is not good for the future of America. The most powerful line is ¨Madness is what you demonstrate and that's exactly how anger works and operates Man, you gotta have love just to set it straight, Take Control of your mind and meditate, Let your soul gravitate to the love, y´all, y´all.¨ What is inspiring about this line is that all you need in this world is love and there should be no more hate. Love your own race and don´t discriminate other races, be equal to everyone.  They are suggesting to take control of your own mind and make love and find your inner self by meditating. Another key point to this song is they say people are dying including children, so is there really love in this world?

War

The title of the song is War the song from War & Peace album. Edwin Starr preformed this song. The song was recorded in 1970 during the Vietnam war. The song is using Vietnam war for a specific event. The song is arguing that war is not a good thing and the younger generation is dying over it. The main point is that there is a better way to solve this then with war.

The reason why this line is powerful because he is talking about how college students are the un rested generation. The next line is who wants to die in war because war comes and goes and the only thing to remain is the values of culture.
This line is on repeat throughout the song giving us a powerful message saying war is not a good thing the world.
Edwin Starr is trying to tell his audience that there is a better way than going to war and we should find the solution.

Into War

In the song, "American Blood" by Reckless Kelly on the album Bulletproof is an anti-war song with clarity about war. Reckless Kelly is the one who first performed it in 2008, released with his album. This song is arguing that war is horrible. It is not a good thing all of this is for a silver or golden or bronze star or medal, they can keep this star. For the war or not, the main idea is that the troops of war deserve a little more respect and support for the job they are doing. This song is helping appreciating the sacrifices and work men and women in uniform did as well as their families. This song also calls out Washington getting money for the expense of 30,000+ american lives. The very first line provided a new perspective of war was when he said “Johnny can't drink 'cause Johnny ain't twenty-one.Yeah but he's eighteen and he's pretty handy with a gun. They sent him off to a foreign land”. Johnny is young, he is not even in his twenties yet but they sent him to war. It just a demonstration of crazy it is in America, you basically do not have a choice for whether you wanted to go or not back then. It is like striking you of your rights. In the third verse he says, “Well Johnny can't walk but the medic said he's okay to fly. And the newspapers tell us he's a hero and hell of a guy”
This is extremely powerful because Johnny fought in war and lost his legs and all he gets for the work he did was tell the world he is a hero. It does make you think of how the world actually treats the people who fought and lost their limbs and other parts and all we can say is wow he is so brave and all that and give them a piece of copper or something. I know we have a day to celebrate them but we can do better than that.

21 Guns

The song 21 Guns is asking if we thing the war is worth fighting because of all the pain, suffering and sacrifice that results from it. The song point out some things like "does the pain out weigh the pride" or " do you know whats worth fighting for when its not worth dying for" and I think that these are good points. The war on terror in the middle east has been going on for a long time and many people on both sides have died and more will die if we don't think about stopping soon. I think at some point we just need to see how much pride weighs and try to stop this war that has been going on for too long.

Vietnam Veterans: Heroes or Villains?

After soldiers returned from Vietnam to the United States, they received a lot of bitterness from people and were blamed for fighting in a war in which a majority of people viewed as pointless. No gratitude was shown to these men, despite them risking their lives and fighting for a country who did everything short of dragging them to Vietnam. These men actually received quite the opposite. They were attacked by anti-war groups, spat upon, shunned, and in some instances refused service at restaurants. This was the first time veterans of any American war were treated so poorly. Before the Vietnam War, men returning from combat were met with glory, parades, and citizens viewed them as heroes. So why were Vietnam veterans treated so differently?

The song ¨Born in the U.S.A.¨ written by Bruce Springsteen comments on just that. He criticizes the United States for their treatment of the men who were serving their country and doing their duty as citizens of the United States. In the song he refers to how much these soldiers already had to deal with when they came back home, to then have to deal with the attacks of the American media and public. Springsteen refers to this in the line ¨The first kick I took was when I hit the ground.¨ In his song he also speaks upon how it was not only hard for veterans to get jobs after the war, but they also did not received adequate support from the government transitioning back into their lives. ¨Went down to see my V.A. man He said "Son, don't you understand".¨ The message of this song is still very strong and important. What happened to these soldiers happened and cannot be changed, however it is a great opportunity for the United States to learn from its mistakes and treat veterans of war as what they are, heroes.

Buffalo Soldier

"Buffalo Soldier" is a reggae song that was written by Bob Marley and Noel "King Sporty" Williams.  The song was performed by Bob Marley & The Wailers on Bob Marley's album call Confrontation. The song is about the black cavalry fighters who were sent to take over the west, and to get rid of the Native Americans during the American Indian wars.

In the first verse Marley says "Buffalo soldierdreadlocked rasta, There was a Buffalo Soldier in the heart of America, Stolen from Africa, brought to America, Fighting on arrival, fighting for survival." The term Buffalo Soldier is what the Natives Americans called the black cavalry fighters. They compared the soldiers physical features to a Buffalo. The line "I'm just a Buffalo Soldier in the heart of America" has mean because he is saying that the slaves who are fighting in the war are the ones who built America. The last lines in the Verse, "Stolen from Africa, brought to America, Fighting on arrival, fighting for survival," are powerful because whites had captured Africans to make them into their slaves. This line means that black slaves were fighting as soon as they arrived in America and before. "

Marin Gaye Protest

Whats Going On?

In the early 70's we have faced a lot of adversity with different things in the world. Some examples were police brutality and being forced to be in the war. Marvin Gayes' song, Whats going on? tells a lot about police brutality and what we should protest for to make things better.

One of the most important lyrics Marvin Gaye had in his song was, "Picket lines and picket signs, don't punish me with brutality." This is powerful because Marvin Gaye is trying to say that when us black people protest everyone needs to listen, make a stand and make it powerful to a point where the police they need to listen too. Instead of injuring and hurting someone protesting. Another important line was, "We don't need to escalate, you see, war is not the answer, for only love can conquer hate." This is very important because he is saying violence and war is not the answer. Also, he is saying there is one way to defeat hate and that's to love. If only everyone loved and had respect for each other then the world would be a way different place and more organized. And that is what he is saying. Lastly, one more last lyric he stated was, "There's far too many of you dying, you know we've got to find a way." This is powerful because Marvin Gaye realizes how many people are being punished and killed just for protesting. He is trying to send a message to everyone saying there is a way to stop this mass murder rate. We can’t just ignore this, we have to make a change fast!

Can You Handle That?

The song “Like A Boy” by Ciara from her album The Evolution is a true story because it connects with real life situations and emotions that others can relate to,but this song seems to promote the stereotype of men being jerks and always doing women wrong but also the double standard that men are justified for their behavior but if women were to do the same thing and behave the same way then women would be looked at differently as well as judged.. For example, Ciara says, “If I played you… Would you like that? Had friends… Would you like that? Never call? Would you like that?”. She basically says that men would not like the treatment women receive. Men get praised for having slept with multiple women but when women do the same things that men do they receive names and this new image of themselves (a whole new representation of themselves and how people see you).

Another example, Ciara says, “Would the rules change up? Or would you still apply? If I played you like a toy”. If the roles were reversed women are petty or they are stooping low and the men all of a sudden feel hurt but even though these situations do occur but it does not happen with every male women face. An additional example, when Ciara talks about how they cannot handle if the treatment they give to women were returned. This situation promotes and somewhat generalizes how all men are jerks and they mistreat women. Not all men are like that and it makes it hard for the good guys out there to get a chance with these women when they have been user to these “players”.

Dust to Side Chicks

Beyonce has always been an icon for many people. She makes music, acts at times, and performs. She came out with a video called "Lemonade" that was all about Race, Gender, Sexuality, and power. Beyonce also addressed infidelity on Jay-Z's part. The beginning of the Film starts off showing a bunch of African american women wearing white dresses from an older era. Beyonce is speaking quietly but powerful about women and about how she feels and speaking poetically. Throughout the video she goes through the different emotions a woman may feel when she finds out that her husband or significant other has cheated on her. Each performance is a different emotion and they go in order such as denial was one of the first emotions and acceptance was another one. She is talking about the way she is treated and yelling sometimes but other times she is speaking.

Beyonce is wearing outfits that, as usual, show off a significant amount of skin and show her acceptance of her sensuality. Beyonce has never been afraid to show off her skin in a video and she still isn't afraid. She expresses her feelings in a way that shows that she is strong and she will get revenge when she feels angry. Throughout she is seen as extremely beautiful but also aggressive. Women are usually not supposed to be aggressive or talk angrily, but beyonce does just that. She talks about his cheating and shows her crying and being upset, but she also shows her picking herself up and not caring about him. Society usually views women who don't care about things as being fake or unladylike but beyonce curses aggressively and sings about how much she doesn't care. Amani Shikhan wrote an article dedicated to "Lemonade" and she says "'Lemonade' is a lesson in skill and talent. In persistence. In boundaries and the complicated ways we try to hold onto love even when it isn’t there, when it lies dormant without stimulation. The baggage that becomes sustenance, the dirty rituals that keep us sane, the inheritance of the earth’s soil and its inhabitants who reject our every breath, our most human needs and desires. “Don’t hurt yourself,” she warns. 'Lemonade' isn’t for the weak or the thoughtless. Pour the lemonade from pitcher to pitcher, softly intertwining its components, Beyoncé’s soft voice over instructs. Give it time. Handle with care. Sip slow"(Amani Shikhan).

Towards the end of the video she brings in other women and she lets them talk to the camera. They are talking about how they do their hair and their nails and they have to look pretty. They are saying stereotypical things that women say. They are seen as being very uptight and caring very much about their appearance and what other people may think about the way that they look. Beyonce is at the end and doesn't have much makeup on and she is going through a cornfield and seeming very carefree which helps her come across as more powerful before. Throughout the film beyonce uses language and singing along with film techniques to make her point that she is a strong woman, she's proud of her skin color and she's proud of who she is.

No Church in the Wild

"No Church in the Wild" is  a song about religion and how you have to fight for yourself, because there is no one else there to save you when you're on your own.
Album: Watch the Throne
Artist: Kanye West
YouTube
Theme: You have to fight for yourself, as there is nobody else there to save you (“no church in the wild”)

The name of the song is "No Church in the wild" by Kanye West (with Jay-Z)(feat. Frank Ocean). This song is from the album Watch the Throne. This song is about how religion and how you have to fight for yourself, because there is no one else there to save you when you're on your own.

1. This song shows an analogy because of the verses "what's a mob to a king, what's a king to a god, what's a god to a non-believer, who don't believe in anything." He uses this poetic device to enhance how powerless the previous people or symbols are to the next.

2. This song shows a sense of Euphony. It shows Euphony from the verses "what's a mob to a king, what's a king to a god, what's a god to a non-believer, who don't believe in anything. We make it out alive. Alright, alright. No church in the wild." It shows that this piece of music has a sense of harmony, and it is pleasent to listen to.

3. This song also shows a sense of rhyming in most of its verses. A few of its verses are: "That’s somethin’ that the pastor don’t preach. That’s somethin’ that a teacher can’t teach. When we die, the money we can’t keep. But we probably spend it all ’cause the pain ain’t cheap." As you can already tell that the end of verse 1 rhyms with the end of verse 2, and the end of verse 3 rhyms with the end of verse 4."

Take Back Chicago

Chance The Rapper is a modern Chicago hip-hop artist that has recently been growing in popularity. In Chance’s song, Paranoia, He talks about all of the problems and injustices in the black communities of his hometown, Chicago, Illinois.

In the second line of the song Chance The rapper says,

“Somebody'll steal daddy's Rollie, call it the neighborhood watch”

Chance is saying that someone will steal his father’s wristwatch. Making a reference to a neighborhood watch goes back to the Trayvon Martin case when Zimmerman shot Trayvon Martin during his neighborhood watch shift. This goes with the theme of the song because Chance talks about the racism and injustices of America and how no one pays attention to the problems of the black communities

When speaking about why the country doesn’t come into the hood or why the media doesn’t show the deep problems in the black community he says,

“Probably scared of all the refugees, look like we had a fuckin' hurricane here”

This simile is a reference back to when hurricane Katrina hit in 2005. The government took days to respond to the problem and many Americans believe it is because the hurricane mainly devastated the black communities. Chance believes that the same thing is going on in the black communities of Chicago. He is saying that if all of the violence and poverty were going on in white neighborhoods it would be a public spectacle.

Near the end of the song Chance begins to talk about the summer time and how he dreads when Summer comes. He sings,

“I heard everybody's dying in the summer
So pray to God for a little more spring”

Chance says this because in Chicago the homicide rates go up drastically in the summer time. He wants it to be springtime forever because everyone stays inside during spring due to all of the rain, thus not killing anyone. Upon further inspection this line also has another deeper meaning. In the bible, there is speak of the rapture or judgment day. This is a time when god says he will end the world in fire. In the song, Chance uses summer as a metaphor for the rapture because they are both hot. Chance is saying that everyone will die and either go to heaven or hell so we need to all pray to god that the time hasn’t come yet.

On the surface, Chance The Rapper comes off as a reckless hood rapper but in reality he is very thoughtful and caring. Chance has a soft spot for his home Chicago and wants to bring awareness to the problems at hand in our city.

Lose to Win

“Lose to Win” by Fantasia Barrino from the album Side Effects of You that was released in the year of 2013.

Lose to Win by Fantasia Barrino is one of my favorite and most powerful songs she has ever written. This songs tell you about the way women lose their self dealing with a man. Not only dealing with a man but dealing with life within itself such as people losing homes , jobs , loved ones, their self esteem and whatever life throws at them. Sometimes you have to lose yourself in order for a great blessing to come. In the process of losing your self and everything else around you ,you notice who’s there for you and who is not. Sometimes it takes to hit a bump in the road just so you can be at peace again. Sometimes in the process of hitting this bump and wrecking your car you lose yourself. You have to learn how to pick up the pieces and learn to love yourself all over again. Fantasia states “ Never felt so ugly, Pretending that he loves me” meaning that the man she thought that loved her made her feel as if she was less than a woman. She knew that deep down inside that he loved her at one point or at least she thought he did. The love begin to fade away once he started getting the sexual things he wanted, gifts , or money , which was the reason of him seeking after her from the very beginning . Many women has been in the same predicament Fantasia has been in or even close to where she was and she’s trying to warn them before the storm decide to arrive and wash everything away. When you love a man and a man doesn't love you back it tears you apart , from the inside out , you let yourself go and feel like you're not worth more than anything but a pile of dog poo. It could be a man that you're in a relationship with , your father or a male that meant something very special to you. Fantasia continues on and says “ Now I'm sick and tired of , You, just taken right off , Know when I forgive you” meaning every time she forgives an individual person in her life or a situation that occurred it comes right back up but hits her ten times harder. Fantasia goes through many of hurts and she’s human like everyone else and she is very much human and when she loves she loves hard not for the appearance or how much that person has but she “loved you for your inner, inner, inner”. It’s a lot of things that need to take a step back out of her life and others “But you won't dare, 'cause you're too scared” , explains how something that she knows and people know can eat them alive won't change anything about it , because they're afraid of the outcome of it all without that person or thing non-existent. Even “If it makes you cry, cry, cry And all you do is fight, Can't get no sleep at night? Sometimes you gotta lose to win again. That's the only way in life to ever survive through the rough times that people and herself go through. Its a disciplinary action that you have placed on yourself and your emotions. Your emotions feel like they're in the ring fighting against the situation that you're going through. the blood , sweat , and tears represent the crying at night . the matt that you're fighting on represent the sleepless night that she has occurred. but every brick that was thrown at her she took it and stood on it just to prove that you “Needed someone so bad? To make it last does not always exist and you can “Lose , To win again.

Broad Shoulders

Taylor Bennett is the rapper out of Chicago and little brother to 2013's breakout rapper Chance the Rapper. The song "Broad Shoulders" off of Taylor's debut album of the same name is the first song between the two siblings that has been released. Taylor trades verses with brother Chance to describe their childhood and growth from boys to men. The song's lyrics are rapped through a different perspective for each verse, with the first being Taylor as a young man , then Chance as he grows into maturity, until the last verse which is in the perspective of parents of the teenagers growing up

The biggest source of poetic language throughout the song can be seen in Chance's verse in which he says

"Head on his shoulders ain't his own...
Who forced the hand to make the clone?"

with this language Chance is observing the influence that children have on their kids when growing up and how a big of a role parents have in shaping their children thus " Who forced the hand to make the clone."

Chance induces more poetic lines with a huge nod to the iconic tragedy, Romeo and , written by William Shakespeare; one of the most famous poets of all time.

"A rose by any other text will still be Rosetta"

This line is a play on the famous line " A rose by any other name would still smell as sweet." meaning that no matter the name or reputation of a rose it would still smell beautiful. Chance's twist on the line shows that no matter the language that his wisdom flows through, it is still just as meaningful.

On the final verse by Taylor we hear the unavoidable issues that many parents face when their children reach the teenage years.

"Watch her get older and older until she don't wanna be known as your daughter
Watch him get older and older until he forgets everything that you taught him"

These lines show the the disconnect the parents and their children go through when in their teen years. How young women don't wanna be known as "Daddy's little girl" any more, and sons growing up and going through new experiences that may be against the morals he was taught from his parents.

Carpe Diem

This is a spanish son called "Carpe Diem" of Arce is in an album called "Luciffer" and it's kind of a rap album when it expresses his feelings on that time that it was 2014, this song especially, I can, I feel identified and it helped me a lot when my grandpa died the same year, it talks as the name says Carpe Diem, that it means like "live the moment" and feel that the things in the past are just experiences and you have to pass them.
This poetry song it goes to everyone who lived some hard moments in their lifes, but everyone does, I have chosen that song because its also very clearly where does it want to bring the audience that it is this hard moments that you had or you lived in your life and that nothing it can't make you more happy that family as it says in some of his lines like:

Amigos hay dos, mama y papá las
Lágrimas vienen cuando alguien se va
Esta vida no es justa, otra quizá
No voy a esperar la muerte en el sofá

This it means that there are only two friends, mom and dad, it refers that the family is the first thing you have to keep and be save, then it says that tears are alive when somebody lives, this life is not fear, maybe another , I'm not gonna wait death in the sofa, so it means that things happen and you can't do anything only step on and like leave all this hardships apart of your daily life, because he doesn't want to be sad because its nothing good for him.

Why Tyrone Can't Use Erykah's Phone

Cellular Device by Erykah Badu is apart of her album But You Can't Use My Phone which was inspired by Drake’s hit song Hotline Bling. This album is a phone themed work of art, which remixes and remakes on of Erykah’s best hits, Tyrone. The song itself carries the phone theme on while focusing on how people are always calling and texting Erykah when they want something. Which symbolizes how once she became a celebrity everyone just saw her as a personal bank or their own personal entertainer, when in all actuality they weren’t that close to her before, and really aren’t that close to her now.

Erykah uses repetition of the line “Late night when you need my love/Late night when you need my love/Late night when you need my love/Late night when you need my love” which makes the line resonate with you, a common technique in poetry. The line itself of course is describing how Tyrone use to call her when he wanted her companionship.

She also chooses more interesting nouns and verbs such as saying cellular device instead of cellphone which keeps you much more intrigued in the piece and for some it may make you have to listen a little harder and think more about the piece.

She also uses the voicemail interlude to show her beliefs and what days she celebrates and are important to her. If you're calling to wish her a happy birthday, Kwanzaa, MLK,/ Black History Month, Juneteenth, or Hanukkah, press 2”. Obviously she celebrates her birthday; then Kwanzaa: the celebration of African heritage in African American culture; MLK day: Which celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. and all of his efforts with the civil rights movement; Black history month: The “remembrance of important people and events in the history of the African diaspora”; Juneteenth: the ending of slavery in 1865; and Hanukkah: the festival of lights.

Erykah’s use of imagery is also amazing such as “glasses of champagne out on the dance floor” shows the image of people at a party dancing and drinking champagne but it is just said in a clever manner much like poetry. At the end of the song she has a section that is a voicemail that clearly defines the entire album. It basically list off all the reasons people call her on her cellular device.
The voicemail tone goes, “If you're calling to beg for some shit in general, press 4/If you're calling to beg for some shit, but this is that pre-call before the actual begging, press 5/If you've already made that pre-call and this is the actual call that you beg, press 6”. While giving insight into her life it is also is pretty funny because you can just imagine how many people do this to celebrities that they “use to be cool with”.

The album But You Can't Use My Phone as a whole tells a great story and the song, Cellular Device  is a fun and light response to the freeloaders in life such as Tyrone.
