O'Brien says,

"Daddy, tell the truth," Kathleen can say, "did you ever kill anybody?" And I can say, honestly, "Of course not." Or I can say, honestly, "Yes."

O'Brien shows that war never ends and it steals your innocence because it's years later and his daughter is asking if he had ever killed someone and he says that whether or not he did or didn't kill that man his innocence is still gone and that man isn't any less dead.  O'Brien doesn't fully know if it was him that killed that man but he still blames himself for his death.
