21st Century Slavery

Sweatshops have become a major problem around the world over the past years. The US needs to address the sweatshop issue because the people are being poorly mistreated. They have no work safety, low wages and are being taken advantage of. Larry Towell a reporter from VICE state's “Most of the factory's employees had migrated from poverty-stricken rural Bangladesh to sew for $2.00 a day, working 12- to 14-hour shifts six to seven days a week” (Towell). This goes back to the point of the workers being underpaid for their hard work. In america the minimum wage is way higher and they would have to pay to maintain conditions for the workers. This is why companies go to the poorer countries to process the merchandise because they don't have to worry about things like this and they can maximize their profit. The workers can complain because they are already poor and really need the jobs. Haya Nasser, a reporter from Al Jazeera, states “Half complained of poor ventilation, and eye and nose irritation from chemicals. A third of the workers surveyed reported a lack of clean drinking water at work and almost a third said they are not allowed to take rest breaks” (Nasser). This is proving that the workers are being slaved and treated unfairly treated. They almost can't afford to take a break because they are already being payed so minimal for work that they almost must non stop to even make such a small wage. In 2015, i think this is a major problem that needs to be fixed and stopped. There is no reason this should still be going on.
